"
I've played with various manual focus 50mm lenses. Apparently you can get good or bad SMC A 50 2.0s. I've gotten my hands on three of them, and all have performed admirably.
I can't discern any IQ difference among the A 50 2.0, the M 50 2.0, and the 50 2.0s by Sears or Ricoh. The A version is not as dense as the M version but still feels very solid. This lens definitely "feels" better than the non-Pentaxes.
I haven't had any complaints about softness using this lens, even with it wide open. I have a FA 50 1.4, and the depth of field is so shallow that I rarely open beyond 2.0 anyway. The price for the MF 1.7 and the 1.4 have climbed while the 2.0 seems to have stayed cheap due to availability / lack-of-desirability.
If you want to experiment with manual focus and are on a tight budget, grab this one (or the M version, or the Sears, etc.) I have really enjoyed the Green Button metering and the Catch in Focus. Manual focus on a Pentax is fun and easy!"
"True, it's a kit lens. I got it in trade from a friend who bought it years and years ago bundled with his K1000. , I have made some great photographs from this lens. It seems as though people either get a good one or a bad one, and I must have been blessed to get a good one! Even wide open I have had great success with this lens, and stopped down two or more stops, even better! Though difficult to focus sometimes in low light on my K2000, when I hit it, the photos are awesome. Separation is fantastic when shooting wide open, depth of field is very thin there as well. Great contrast, great color, great sharpness for a kit lens from twenty plus years ago. I keep this lens in my bag at all times, just in case I run in to a situation where a flash wouldn't work and the light is low. Of course it doesn't really compare to an f/1.2 for low light shooting, but for the price, it's definitely worth having in the kit. I usually shoot on aperture priority or manual, and this lens works perfectly for either. The mount is metal, and the build quality is very nice for a kit lens. Any problems I have focusing are due to the K2000 not having a split screen or other screen optimized for manual focus, but it's still a very usable lens. There's no hesitation to carry it around all the time, as it's an inexpensive lens to replace should something happen to it. I don't have a large, or even small, budget for camera equipment, but thanks to this lens I am able to test the waters of prime lenses and manual focus, and have enjoyed shooting with it very much. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a manual 50mm on the cheap."
